Charlotte Hornets Advance After LaMelo Ball’s Clutch Performance Caps Off Intense One Point Victory Over Miami Heat

    1 min read

In one of the most dramatic finishes of the play-in tournament, LaMelo Ball capped off a sensational performance with a game-winning moment that lifted the Charlotte Hornets to a thrilling 127–126 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night.

With just 4.7 seconds remaining, Ball redeemed himself from a pair of costly errors moments earlier, slicing through the defense for a decisive right-handed layup. On the final possession, Charlotte sealed the win as Miles Bridges rejected Davion Mitchell’s last-second attempt at the rim, igniting a chaotic and emotional celebration across the arena. The result marked the franchise’s first home postseason victory in over a decade.

Ball, who remained the focal point throughout the night, celebrated emphatically at midcourt, flexing in front of a roaring sell-out crowd. In a moment that quickly drew attention, he was later seen on local broadcast footage playfully throwing two light jabs at Hugo, the Hornets’ mascot, before embracing teammate Coby White in celebration. The mascot appeared unfazed, walking away as festivities continued.

Despite the late-game heroics, Ball’s night was not without controversy. Earlier in the second quarter, he appeared to make contact with Bam Adebayo, causing the Heat center to fall awkwardly. No foul was called on the play, though Adebayo exited the game with a lower back injury after just 11 minutes and did not return. Following the game, Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra suggested the incident warranted an ejection.

Ball later addressed the sequence, explaining that he had been disoriented after taking a hit to the head moments earlier and issued an apology for the contact.

The contest itself unfolded as a back-and-forth battle, reaching overtime after White knocked down a difficult, off-balance three-pointer from the corner with 10.8 seconds remaining in regulation. Miami had a chance to win at the buzzer, but Tyler Herro missed a jumper, sending the game into an extra period.

Overtime proved equally dramatic. Charlotte briefly lost control after surrendering a five-point lead, with Ball committing a turnover at midcourt before fouling Herro on a three-point attempt. Herro converted all three free throws, giving Miami a narrow 126–125 advantage and setting the stage for Ball’s final, defining play.

Reflecting on the game-winner, Ball credited the team’s execution in the closing seconds, while also acknowledging the electric atmosphere created by the home crowd. Meanwhile, Bridges emphasized the team’s resilience, highlighting their ability to stay composed through the game’s highs and lows before delivering on both ends of the floor when it mattered most.

With the victory, Charlotte advances to face the loser of the matchup between Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers, as they continue their push to end a decade-long playoff drought.
